Pop star shows baby bump

September 7th, 2010

Lily Allen showed off her growing baby bump at the London premiere of ‘Tamara Drewe’ Monday. The ‘Smile’ singer, who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Sam Cooper, came out to support her mom, Alison Owen, who produced the flick, out October 8.

Although she looked fabulous, the singer admits she’s still self-conscious about all the weight she’s gained.

“I’m aware of the fact that I’ve put on a considerable amount of weight,” she tweeted in August after she announced her pregnancy.

Allen, 25, and Cooper, 32, have been dating for a year. She told Britain’s Sun newspaper, “It goes without saying we are both absolutely delighted.” The star suffered a miscarriage two years ago.

Dr.OZ talks cancer scare

September 7th, 2010

Health guru Dr. Mehmet Oz is now at high risk for developing cancer. He had a recent brush with the disease during a routine procedure and plans to disclose more Tuesday during the season premiere of his show.

Dr. Oz revealed last week that he has a precancerous polyp on his colon, which was caught early enough that it won’t likely turn into something more serious — for now.

“This was a shake-up for me,” he told People magazine. “I have done everything right. I don’t have any family history, and yet I’m ‘high risk’ now.”

Oz’s popular syndicated TV show may have saved him from an early death — or at least a long battle with cancer — as the abnormal cells were found during a colonoscopy that he was taping for his program.

Tiger finally gets some good news!

September 7th, 2010

Tiger Woods was named by Corey Pavin as one of the four “captain’s choices” for the 2010 Ryder Cup on Tuesday morning.

Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler (the first rookie to ever make the Ryder Cup team) joined Woods as well, and all four men seemed particularly excited about the opportunity.

“It’s really exciting for me, obviously, to be included on the team,” Cink said. “I think this makes my third time getting picked (as a captain’s choice) which is getting close to a record. Which means I must not be that good at qualifying.”

Woods, however, hasn’t exactly had that trouble — he’s typically the first guy locked into the Ryder Cup, but obviously this season was different. Pavin refused, however, to acknowledge that he’d been thinking about Tiger’s inability to qualify on his own. Continue Reading »

‘LA Ink’ star Kat Von D and Jesse James are dating

September 3rd, 2010

‘LA Ink’ star Kat Von D and Jesse James are dating — we already know that. What we didn’t know until today is that they’re in love, according to PEOPLE.

“Jesse is only my ninth boyfriend. I don’t hang out with anybody unless I am in love,” Von D, 28, tells PEOPLE.

Asked if she feels James, 41, who split from wife Sandra Bullock earlier this year after being caught with a myriad of mistresses, might be “The One,” Von D said, “I believe he is, so yeah.”

Their relationship blossomed playing Scrabble. “We both realized how nerdy we were,” Kat says.

James was softer-spoken with PEOPLE, giving the mag a simple “yes” when asked if he’s happy. And his favorite thing about Kat Von D? “Everything.”
Von D says James’ cheating scandals didn’t faze her. “I stayed away from that as much as possible, and when we connected recently, it was such a positive thing. It was just like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t spent this much time with you the entire time I’ve known you.’ Now I’m just embracing it and enjoying it.” Continue Reading »

How young is cell phone young?

September 3rd, 2010

Today’s conventional wisdom seems to dictate that “cell phone” should be right there on the back-to-school shopping list along with markers, crayons and new shoes, but when did it become part of our cultural landscape to keep watch over our children 24 hours a day, even when they’re in school?

A recent study conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 51 percent of 12-year-olds owned mobile phones in 2008. In 2004, that number was 18 percent. When my generation was 12 years old, we were just figuring out how to manage the Betamax player and this crazy new technology called a “personal computer.”

Not to mention the fact that our parents actually relied on the proverbial village to help us make it to adulthood. We were surrounded by responsible adults who weren’t named “Mom” and “Dad.” We also had teachers, coaches and our friends’ parents to look out for us. And you know what? Our kids are surrounded by those people, too. Continue Reading »

Kim disses Sex and the City outfits

September 3rd, 2010

Much like “Sex and the City” man-eater Samantha Jones, Kim Cattrall discovered early on that size does, in fact, matter — especially when it comes to her saucy character’s wardrobe.

Though Samantha spent a lot of time out of her clothes, she always looked sexy in the moments she wore them. Because Cattrall is a bit curvier than cast mates Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis, stylist Patricia Field had to be a bit more creative in her clothing choices.

“I’m not a sample size like Sarah and Kristin, and I couldn’t wear a lot of the clothes the young designers would send us,” Cattrall, who debuted a bob haircut in June, tells Vogue UK. “I’d wear a lot of vintage — some of things I wore were like pieces of art.”

And that suited Cattrall just fine, especially because she wasn’t necessarily a fan of the other characters’ ensembles. “I was never into any of Charlotte’s sweet dresses or Sarah’s outfits,” she says. “There were a few pieces of Sarah’s that I liked on their own but not the outfits as such.” Continue Reading »

Ants on a Mcdonalds diet

September 3rd, 2010
What do you get when you fill a 6-by-10-foot Plexiglas enclosure with ants and then feed them a steady diet of McDonald’s Happy Meals?

Why art, of course.

Brooklyn-based artist Elizabeth Demaray’s exhibit — “Corpor Esurit, or we all deserve a break today” — at Exit Art in Manhattan takes a look at what happens when ants are given burgers, shakes and Chicken McNuggets in place of their regular diet (mostly seeds in the case of the ants used in the artwork) for one month, The New York Times reported.

The artist’s goal is to “stage a commentary on the effects of the American diet on the creatures that depend on us for food,” the paper reported. She worked with Dr. Christine Johnson, a scientific assistant and ant researcher at the American Museum of Natural History.
While Demaray’s art is open to interpretation, scientists wonder at her choice of ant — the red harvester ant Pogonomyrmex badius. “Ants of the genus Pogonomyrmex are desert seed harvesters known for their deep nests and toxic venom, not the kind of ants that intrude on a picnic,” according to the article.

What is in your tuna can?

September 2nd, 2010

Step away from that tuna can.

Its “dolphin safe” label produces warm feelings, but don’t mistake it for “turtle safe” or “ocean safe.” And it’s certainly not “tuna safe.” Accidental entanglements of sharks, sea turtles, juvenile tuna and other marine creatures take their own ecological toll — prompting the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s well-regarded Seafood Watch consumer guide to take an unusual step: It recently began telling consumers to avoid all canned tuna, except for the minority labeled “troll caught” or “pole-and-line” caught. That describes precious few cans, typically from small brands selling for around $2.50 to $6.50.

Yes, the canned tuna in U.S. supermarkets is dolphin safe. So is the tuna of more than 90% of the world’s tuna canners — a big eco-marketing accomplishment. The marketing and labels are effective for selling tuna, but extremely misleading if you think the label means environmentally safe, as you’ll see in the list farther below.
Here’s what prompted the aquarium’s move: There’s no way you can tell by looking at a can of Bumble Bee, Starkist, Chicken of the Sea or generic tuna how the fish inside was caught or other particulars that can reveal your lunchpail’s ocean impact. One study found that for every 1,000 tons of yellowfin tuna caught through one particular dolphin-safe technique, “fishermen caught nearly 111,000 other individual fish, including sharks, rays, marlins and sea turtles — several varieties of which are endangered.” Continue Reading »

God has no role in Universe

September 2nd, 2010

Entering the ongoing debate between faith and science, renowned British scientist Stephen Hawking claims that modern physics has now proved that God played no role in the creation of the universe.

In a new book — “The Grand Design,” co-written with American physicist Leonard Mlodinow — the theoretical physicist sets out to demolish Sir Isaac Newton’s claim that an “intelligent and powerful Being” must have shaped the universe, which he believed could not have emerged from chaos. Hawking and Mlodinow rule out the possibility of divine intervention, saying that new theories have made the idea of a supernatural creator redundant.

“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing,” the pair write, in an extract published in today’s London Times. “Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going.” Continue Reading »

Football Player loses earing

September 2nd, 2010

Don’t you hate when you’re going about your day and, suddenly, you realize that your $50,000 earring fell out of your ear at work? It’s the worst! So you can imagine how Miami Dolphins defensive end Kendall Langford must have felt on Tuesday when he realized that his 2.5 carat diamond earring had fallen out of his ear during practice.

The incident was tragic enough that the team halted practice and, according to SI.com, at least nine players were “crawling across the field” searching for Langford’s earring. These players went above and beyond the call of duty, according to the “Bro Code.” Nowhere in the 150 articles of brodom does it say that one needs to crawl across a football field in search of another bros earring. Though if I were writing “Sex and the City 3″ I might write this scene into the movie. Continue Reading »
