Dennis Rodman Highlights

Known for his wild wardrobe and bizarre behavior during his playing days, Dennis Rodman didn’t disappoint at the Naismith Hall of Fame ceremony.

Wearing Gucci shades, a fitted cap, a leopard scarf and designer jeans, Rodman joined Chris Mullin, Tom “Satch” Sanders, Artis Gilmore– who were all wearing suits – as the headliners for the 2011 Hall of Fame Class, who were announced at the Crown Plaza Hotel.

“I thought that the way I am, that I wouldn’t get in,” said Rodman, who starred as for the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls. “People said , ‘Dennis you do too many things off the court that doesn’t represent the Hall’.”

“But it represents that (the committee) looked past all the negativity and said ‘Wow he changed the game — the way people play defense, look at the game and rebound.’”

Tex Winter – who invented the vaunted triangle offense – Stanford women’s coach Tara VanDerveer, Philadelphia University coach Herb Magee, European center Arvydas Sabonis, Olympian Teresa Edwards and deceased Harlem Globetrotter Reece “Goose” Tatum will also be formally inducted in Springfield, Mass. in August.

But Rodman was the center of attention on Monday. A seven-time NBA All-Defensive First-Team honoree and seven-time league leader in rebounds, Rodman anchored the paint and crashed the boards en route to five championships – two with Detroit from 1988-90 and three with Chicago from1995-98.

And it was only fitting, Rodman said, that he received official word of the Hall of Fame election on April Fools Day.

“I thought it was a joke, honestly,” Rodman said. “My agent called and I’m like ‘You’re kidding right’. It was the day I went to Detroit to get my number retired. It’s ironic that my number got retired on April 1st, that’s why I thought it was a joke.”

Mullin’s selection was more predictable. In addition to becoming the all-time leading scorer at St. John’s, the former Golden State Warriors guard savored similar success in the NBA, developing into a five-time All-Star while earning a spot on the heralded 1992 Dream Team.

Now an ESPN analyst, Mullin joked that his selection, coupled alongside the resurgence of the New York Knicks and St. John’s college basketball, officially capped the revival of New York basketball.

“Right now, New York is where everything is supposed to be,” Mullin said. “But it’s special to be recognized. It gives you a humble feeling to be included with all these great players, most of which I played with or dreamed of being like.”

Mullin said he wasn’t surprised at Rodman’s attire. And like the old days, Rodman made no amends for his fashion sense.

“This is how I dress,” Rodman said. “I’m not disrespecting the Hall. I’m not disrespecting these guys here. They dress the way they dress and I dress the way I dress. That don’t make me less of an individual. I love entertaining and I’m just living life.”

Tyson & Pigeons

I knew that Mike Tyson had been raising pigeons since he was young, but didn’t know, until I watched the premiere of Taking On Tyson on Sunday night, that Tyson raced them as well.
Actually, I’m still not entirely convinced Tyson races homing pigeons, at least when there aren’t any cameras around, for pure enjoyment. It looked as though the producers had taken Tyson’s affinity for the birds and then surrounded him with a team of professional pigeon racers, who coach the fighter in the rules and discipline of their subculture, all for the purpose of a TV series.
“Mike’s birds have never raced before,” said narrator Michael Kenneth Williams (Boardwalk Empire; immortal as Omar in The Wire). This Animal Planet series’ way of building suspense is to have Williams say intensely, “If they are released too early, they might not come back.”
Makes sense, right?
The fighter who served three years in prison for rape and took a firm nibble from Evander Holyfield’s ear has spent the past few years rehabilitating his public image. I don’t doubt that Tyson has long found comfort spending time alone on rooftops with his beloved birds, but I also think the show is just as much an effort to domesticate Tyson’s image in the same way his cameo in The Hangover was.
Actually, the weakest aspect of Taking On Tyson isn’t the boxer, who has always been a more complex, intriguing figure than his critics will allow. No, it’s the cast of self-consciously colorful pigeon trainers, who each behaves as though he’s auditioning for his own cable tv reality show, that get in the way of enjoying Tyson communing with the pigeons. For a portrait of the man as both a sensitive soul and competitive brute, you have to see director James Toback’s terrific 2008 documentary Tyson. Toback taps into Tyson’s psyche in a way Taking On Tyson never achieves. As a reality show about pigeon racing, Taking On isn’t terribly compelling, either. In short, it’s neither fish nor fowl.

Shaq hurts legacy :(

Shaquille O’Neal may fifth all-time in scoring with just over 28,000 points, but he feels he left quite a few on the table — or, more specifically, at the line. [Trailing Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,] he knows why he remains short of 30,000 points despite being one of the most prolific scorers of any generation. … “I missed 5,000 free throws; give me 2,500 of those and now I’m at 30,000. I missed 200 games, and averaging 25 a game, so there goes another 5,000 points. I’d be like third if I wasn’t [fooling] around.”

Lebron has regrets

LeBron James doesn’t regret his decision to go to Miami, but he does somewhat regret “The Decision.”

James was highly criticized for the hour-long ESPN special, the show that featured his choice to leave the Cavaliers and join the Heat back in July.

James did not go into specific detail into what he would have changed. But from the sound of it, James would have gone a different route.

“If I had to go back on it, I probably would do it a little bit different,” James said to reporters on Sunday in New Jersey before his Heat played the Nets. “But I’m happy with the decision I made. There’s always going to be a misunderstanding. I don’t know what I would [have done], but I definitely would have changed it.”

James also admitted that the Heat were always his first love.

“Not really,” James said, when asked if he came close to signing with another team. “It was some meetings that were better than others. But at the end of the day, this was the team I felt like I had the best opportunity to win for a long period of time. I didn’t have a list, one through six or one through five, whatever the case was.”

Through three games, James have averaged 20.7 points per game, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists.

The Heat trounced the Nets on Sunday, 101-78.

14yr old girl arm wrestling champion

Think there could never be an arm wrestling story with more heart than “Over the Top“? Think again. Molly DeJohn is just 14 years old and hopes to become the next arm wrestling world champion — and she needs your help.

Molly’s been competing on the arm wrestling circuit since the age of 7, and now, thanks to numerous state championship titles, she’s earned the chance to represent the U.S. in arm wrestling’s biggest tournament.

There’s only one problem: Molly’s dad was laid off and is on unemployment, so her family can’t afford to pay for her trip to Las Vegas to compete. Now Molly is trying to raise money by selling candy bars to pay for her trip. Her family has also set up a fund sanctioned by the U.S. Arm Wrestling Federation to help raise money for her.

Is that Ron Artest?

NBA star Ron Artest is an odd fellow. He’s won a world championship, but he’s better known for his unique brand of behavior.

Artest was the first basketball player to ever run into the stands and attack a fan. Less dangerously, but just as weirdly, he drank cognac during the halftime of games, wore a bathrobe to practice — and applied for a job at Circuit City, so that he could get an employee discount (while earning millions of dollars a year).

All of this makes Artest a risk to have on your team — but it also makes him an excellent guest on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ (weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC).

Ron has been on the show before, and Jimmy is excited to have him back. Kimmel is ready for some weirdness. Artest doesn’t disappoint him. Mr. Artest showed up in a fake beard, and also wore a crazy hat and socks with sandals. This was a major fashion faux pas, but that was just the beginning. Next, Ron made Jimmy play touch football, and confessed his undying love for singer Celine Dion. It was all so bewildering that … well, you should just watch it for yourself.

Kobe takes high road

Michael Jordan seems to have a difficult time heaping praise on anyone who might be in his neighborhood, so it should come as little surprise that he believes Kobe Bryant is one of the Top 10 guards in history. Not top five. And certainly not top two. Top 10. Bryant didn’t take Jordan’s comments as an insult. “It’s an accurate statement,” Bryant said. “I’m definitely one of the top 10 guards. It could mean two, it could mean one, it could mean four or five. I’m definitely one of the top thousand.” … “I’ve always been comfortable as a kid growing up to think that when my career is over, I want them to think of me as an overachiever despite the talent that I have,” Bryant said.

We’re introducing you to BMX park rider Daniel Dhers. Dhers hails from Caracas, Venezuela where he first started to ride. He became the rider to watchin 2006 and went on to win multiple Action Sports Tour titles and X Games medals. Dhers also took home the gold medal this year at X Games 16 in BMX Park.
