Kim disses Sex and the City outfits

Much like “Sex and the City” man-eater Samantha Jones, Kim Cattrall discovered early on that size does, in fact, matter — especially when it comes to her saucy character’s wardrobe.

Though Samantha spent a lot of time out of her clothes, she always looked sexy in the moments she wore them. Because Cattrall is a bit curvier than cast mates Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis, stylist Patricia Field had to be a bit more creative in her clothing choices.

“I’m not a sample size like Sarah and Kristin, and I couldn’t wear a lot of the clothes the young designers would send us,” Cattrall, who debuted a bob haircut in June, tells Vogue UK. “I’d wear a lot of vintage — some of things I wore were like pieces of art.”

And that suited Cattrall just fine, especially because she wasn’t necessarily a fan of the other characters’ ensembles. “I was never into any of Charlotte’s sweet dresses or Sarah’s outfits,” she says. “There were a few pieces of Sarah’s that I liked on their own but not the outfits as such.” Continue Reading »

Steal this ponytail look

Any girl with curls knows a sleek ponytail is almost impossible — especially during the summer (hello, humidity). But according to Ted Gibson, celebrity stylist and Hair Basics expert, it’s entirely possible.

Need proof? Gibson gave Debra Messing a stylish textured ponytail for a red carpet event–with not a frizz or flyaway in sight.

The most important step? Your brush choice.

With highly textured hair, the key to achieving a sleek ponytail – i.e. minimize frizz and maximize shine – is a boar and nylon bristle brush. The double-bristle brush works with your hair, not against it, to create a smooth, frizz-free finish. Continue Reading »

Haircut record

(Aug. 31) — When it comes to hairstyling, Patrick Lomantini stands 227 cuts above the rest. That’s because the 42-year-old stylist recently gave that many haircuts during a 72-hour period in a bid to set a Guinness World Record in endurance haircutting.

The attempt, staged at Lomantini’s salon in Wichita, Kan., took place from Aug. 19 to 22. To ensure a steady supply of customers, Lomantini offered haircuts free of charge, with all tips and donations going to the Kansas Humane Society. Continue Reading »

Colorful dress made of Wire!

Last week was Austin Fashion Week, and the event’s ‘Keep Austin Beautiful’ show featured upcycled and recycled designs from Texan artists. Designer Tina Sparkles (who might be a Baz Luhrmann fan) created a one-shouldered frock, called ‘System Supernova,’ out of discarded computer wire. Sure, it might not be too movement-friendly, but the multicolored twists and inherent volume of the material made for a fab, full-bodied skirt.

Bold brows are in!

This fall, as you’ve been flipping through the September issues, you’ve most likely noticed a bevy of bushy-browed models and celebrities reminiscent of Brooke Shields Ă  la “The Blue Lagoon” and Madonna during her “Like A Virgin” days.

Well, your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you.

A new school of in-your-face arches emerged on the Fall 2010 runways of Prada, Thakoon, Balenciaga, Narciso Rodriguez, and Marni. And trendsetters like Victoria Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Scarlett Johansson have all been spotted wearing sharp brows. Continue Reading »

How Julia Roberts’ Costumer Beat the Heat for ‘Eat Pray Love’

From Europe to Bali, filming Eat Pray Love was one hot job–literally! With temperatures soaring to over 100 degrees in some locations, it was no easy task keeping star Julia Roberts in costume and comfortable. “I made sure the clothes were as light as they possibly could be and still told the story,” Eat Pray Love costume designer Michael Dennison tells PEOPLE. And the scorching heat wasn’t the only issue for the skilled costumer when it came to dressing Julia. While shooting in Rome, Dennison also had to account for his leading lady’s real and perceived weight gain due to all those eating scenes. “She probably put on about seven pounds,” he admits. “I scaled down clothes and stuff like that to make them look tighter, and loosened up clothes to make it look like she was gaining more weight than she actually did.” And by the time they got to India, the progression to baggy clothing seemed natural for Julia’s character. “It was intrinsic to the Ashram that her clothes be as loose and flowy and airy as possible,” says Dennison. “It’s like a dress-code, they’re prayer clothes and also work clothes, and to be practical you [don't] want anything close to your body. It’s too hot!” –Andrea DeSimone; with reporting by Mary Green

Tinted tights are in!

Hold on to your tiaras — tan tights are the latest celebrity trend!

Best associated with beauty pageants and figure skating, tinted stockings are being worn by stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyoncé, and French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the Daily Express reports.

And according to a new poll of 1,750 British women by Charnos hosiery, 81 percent preferred to wear tan tights rather than expose their bare legs in summer, according to the paper.

“In this hot weather women want the instant sun-kissed, polished effect,” Charnos brand manager Alison Baines told the paper.

“They don’t need to worry about ‘faking it’ or streaky pins, they can just pull on a pair of tights and go.”

“Cosmetic hosiery” is also reportedly flying off the shelves.

Charnos told the Daily Express that they’ve seen a 20 percent sales increase in tan tights, while Marks & Spencer has reported a 28 percent increase in sheer toe-less styles.

Kim Kardashian is single again!

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian is reportedly breaking up her relationship with Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin. According to E! News, “  they   have been having fun this summer [but] things are not super serious,” said a source.

“They’re taking things slowly and are cooling off a little. Kim wants to be single and date around.”

Kim has also recently revealed she only likes to date sexy guys. “As long as you’re in shape and have a good body, I’m interested,” she said. “I love to work out so I think that’s why I have dated athletes in the past. I just like that look in a guy.”

Grow your hair longer

If you’ve been trying to grow longer hair, you know what a long and frustrating process this can be — especially if your tresses are prone to breakage and thinning. Just when it finally reaches your shoulders, your hairstylist says it’s time to snip a couple of inches off those fried and tattered ends, bringing you right back to where you started a few months ago.

But one of London’s leading stylists, Michael Van Clarke, is hoping to remedy this with his new product line, 3 More Inches (3MI) — a haircare system designed to decrease hair’s aging process (those thinning ends) and thereby increase its length and thickness.

“I truly felt that there was nothing on the market that nourished and protected the hair effectively – in a natural way,” said Van Clarke. “Manufacturers always took the quick-fix cosmetic route, either filling their products with cheap silicones and plasticizing ingredients, which generally gave the hair more than a hint of Barbie doll texture, or using such heavy surface-smoothing ingredients that anyone with normal or fine hair avoided because it made their hair too heavy and flat.” Continue Reading »
